Check V58.42 which indicates coverage if coded also in 140-239. Then I located 174.8 and 174.9, whichever is most applicable. V codes are aftercare codes and can-sometimes-be the main/first ICD-9 code used for billing for Medicare A coverage. Looking at V58.49, "Other specified aftercare following surgery", I'm wondering if these codes would work: 174.8 (or 174.9, whichever is best); V58.42; and, V58.49. I am not a coding expert, but I offer this to you.

Libby,
ICD 9 Codes are for medical diagnoses, not procedure codes.
You are describing a medical procedure. You could code for seroma (or
whatever, the MD called the fluid collection that necessitated the
aspiration) but there is no need (that I am aware of) to code the actual
procedure anywhere.

How would you code needle aspiration of fluid from post-op
mastectomy site performed by physician in room. My software will not allow
me to enter any code (the one I chose is 85.91) with less than 3 digits to
left of decimal point?
