The resident could receive the entire 100 days if there continued to be a daily skilled service. Are you changing dressings daily? Is there treatment being done? Usually there is daily skilled services provided for a resident with a Stage 4 ulcer. Also, when the 100 days are exhausted, that resident will continue to require daily skilled services most likely. So, the resident will NOT receive a break in skilled services until the ulcer/ulcer care no longer meets the daily skilled services criteria. Someone will need to be responsible for letting billing know when the daily skilled services end so they can send a bill noting the end of the services to the FI and begin the 60 day count toward a new benefit period.

Subject: Medicare A Coverage Days
This question comes from one of our MDS coordinators in the field. I do not have enough expertise to answer. Can someone shed some light please:
A resident was discharged from PT/OT on 12/21/03 as she was not progressing. An OMRA was done 12/29/03 since she has a Stage IV decub. How many days will she still be covered for Medicare A ? Billing gave me a date of coverage until 03/13/04. Will she still be covered up to this date even if she doesnt have any order for PT/OT?
Thanks in advance, -Sandy Sodos
