Sally,You are correct. When I searched the 2002 RAI manual, it was not clear how it was to be coded, as it is included in a list of "Antianxiety and Hypnotic" drugs. It seems to me in the "old" manual, it was specified as antianxiety, which is what I have always gone by. Wasn't until I was researching this question that I realized it's not clear in the current manual. I have a neat little drug book that doesn't list it at all. This is one reason why I really think that we have outgrown MDS 2.0I realize that 3.0 isn't ready, and we have to do the best we can with what we have.----- Original Message -----From: Sally MurphySent: Monday, January 05, 2004 9:25 PMSubject: Re: Medication classificationBut chemically hydroxyzine (Atarax, Vistaril) is an antihistamine. That's how I've always dealt with it. It doesn't even show up in the psychotropics. Am I wrong?

Thank You Holly. I have been coding for antianxiety but was not 100% sure I had been coding correctly.Timma----- Original Message -----From: Holly Sox, RN, RAC-CSent: Sunday, January 04, 2004 8:29 PMSubject: Re: Medication classification
I have always classified hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax) as anti-anxiety. The RAI Manual is unclear, at least what I can find on my computer file at home.HS----- Original Message -----From: mdscSent: Sunday, January 04, 2004 7:46 PMSubject: Re: Medication classification
Visteril....classification says: antihistamine, antianxiety, sedative/hypnotic. Given for Anxiety----- Original Message -----From: Holly Sox, RN, RAC-CSent: Sunday, January 04, 2004 4:41 PMSubject: Re: Medication classification
Timma,What drug is it? And is it classified as both, or used as both? Many benzodiazepines are classified as one or the other, but are used fairly interchangeably.----- Original Message -----From: mdscSent: Saturday, January 03, 2004 11:34 PMSubject: Re: Medication classification
If a drug is classified as a antianxiety and a hypnotic which would it be coded as? according to diagnosis?Timma----- Original Message -----From: Debbie SettleSent: Wednesday, November 12, 2003 3:39 PMSubject: RE: Medication classificationI USE THE CALSSIFICATION IN THE PDR. Subject: Medication classification
When documenting medications, do you classify a med for the purpose it is
being given or the classification the medication is in the PDR? Our psych MD
frequently puts residents on Neurotin for anxiety.
