On the outpatient therapy (Part B) side, CMS has issued transmittal 5,
updating Chapter 15 of the Benefit Policy Manual, at
http://www.cms.gov/manuals/pm_trans/R5BP.pdf This transmittal allows
nonphysician practitioners to provide outpatient therapy certs/recerts and
makes changes in the requirements for a face to face physician visit.
"I. SUMMARY OF CHANGES: This transmittal clarifies the time period when a
physician must evaluate the patient, corrects omission of non-physician
practitioners and occupational therapy services, and includes Medicare
enrollment policy requirements for physical therapists and occupational
therapists in private practice."

But again, this is outpatient/Part B therapy. Details in transmittal-Caralyn

physician can sign plan of care. Our NPs were also doing the initial
physicals and first set of orders on our new admits. The head of the NP group
found out that Dr must do all these initial orders. We have changed our
policies until CMS decides to let the NPs'do some of these things
