I normally don't use grace days unless I
need them in order to get the RUG catagory that we are aiming for. On 5 day
assessments I hardly ever use them, as the RUG score usually come from the
estimated days/ min in sectionT. However, if a resident is recieving all THREE
disciplines (PT, OT, & ST) Therapy will let me know it they think that
they can get in enough minutes to get them into an RV or RU catagory by using
grace days.

Hi All:
I have a question from one
of our Medical Records personnel. Can anyone help with this
one?
I have an MDS
question for you, is it OK to use 2-3 grace days with every 5day MDS?
Can you tell me how should an facility use the grace days. We have an out
side Therapy that comes in and see our residents, they are telling us they
used 3 grace days all the time, is this OK. We want to make sure that
our facility is doing this correctly. Please let us know any thing about the
grace days.
Thanks

It's my understanding that grace days should only be used when
appropriate to place a resident in a RUGs category that accurately reflects
the care he receives. I use grace days as rarely as possible. A
good reason to use them would be if the resident wasn't well enough to
participate in therapy the first few days after admission but is expected to
be able to participate in therapy soon. I also use grace days
occasionally when an admission comes late, right before the weekend and
therapy doesn't get in to start treatment right away. I think that it
would be a bad idea to use grace days routinely. May cause the state to
review what you are doing.
