Your reply was music to my ears!  We use the same two after care codes for a hip replacement.  I'm not code savy and am concerned sometimes that I'm not using the appropriate codes.  Thanks for the affirmation!

I used to code the hip fx as well and then at a coding course I was told that the hip fx was not the primary diagnosis.  I should be a V code for after care, V5481 for joint replacement and then V4364 for the hip joint.

The primary would be the hip fracture, I would code the reason for the fall.

Patient is admitted post fall with hip fracture.  There is a debate over which is the primary diagnosis .  Is it the fall or hip fracture.  Do you generally code a fall as a primary diagnosis or the cause for the fall such as gait instability, ataxia etc?

Thank You.
