Unfortunately, one problem is that even people you *do*
know who get computer viruses may inadvertently send out attachments. So you
can't even be sure of attachments from senders you know. (That's why I don't
like that attachments are allowed on this list.)
So, if
I may take the liberty of qualifying Richard's statement, you should
technically not open an attachment from even someone you know unless you are
expecting that specific attachment. If you just randomly get an attachment
from someone, even if you know them, you'd be better off deleting it. This
includes emails that are forwarded and forwarded again that come through as
attachments in some email programs.
I
delete all emails that come to me with an attachment that I did not ask for. I
may miss someone's message that way, but I can ensure that I'm keeping my
computer better protected.
