It depends to some extent on what age you are at present. CML experts
such as Dr. Talpaz now consider CML a chronic and manageable disease. Gleevec
works well in the majority of patients and new drugs such as the BMS and AMN
drugs are working well in patients who have had problems with Gleevec.
There are additional drugs in the pipeline that will cover mutations.
A BMT, like any other treatment method, does not work in every case. The
word "cure" is used a lot with regard to BMT's but it is also important to
understand that mortality rates are higher than with drug treatments, there
can be serious and debilitating complications, and there is also the possibility
of relapse with CML even many years later. Some in this group relapsed
many years after having a BMT.

Subject: [CML] the next step
since i am new i now that i will have questions that some
may not make much since, but please excuse them.
the question i
have this time is wheter or not to persue the next step, which would be
the transplant.
my m.d. is advising against it, and just tells me that
i will be fine andnot to worry so much, but my concern is what if i dont
respond to any of the medications very well, and if i do what if it
last say until im 60 or older, and at that point be out of the
transpant age range. Then what am i supposed to do. I know if the
meds last that long i should be thankful, but..i dunno.
my m.d. has
reluctantly agreed to send me to be tested and put on the registry.
i feel like it is a pre-imptive strike torwards this disease, atleast at
that i will have it out of the way and will know if there are any donors
for me.
am i wrong to take this step. should i just set and wait it
out, and then be forced to get in the "hurry up offense"? I feel i
would have more to gain to hav opened another option. And should my
doctor be so reluctant, i trust him to the max, but it doesnt seem
like he is at all worried with what could happen in an
instant.
also the hospital he wants me to got to is bowman-grey, any
comments on that, the doctor is Dr. Hurd?
please inlighten
me.
thank you
roger
