Megan, It is very expensive medicine in the USA too! If it was not for insurance most people could not afford it. Thankfully there are some and or private programs that can help under some circumstances... the problem is that you pretty much have to become a "beggar" to qualify for aid. Many are forced to sell and expend all of their liquid assets before receiving aid. Fortunately my HMO (insurance - Health Maintenance Organization) Kaiser Permanente has classified Gleevec as a "life sustaining" cancer treatment and covers the cost even though it is not fully covered under the U.S. Medicare - prescription drug coverage. She had a blood sample taken this morning and will have another one in a weeks time to see what effect the glivec is having. Apparently her doctor is hoping that her brother will be a tissue match. If he is and the glivec pushes her into remission we may try for an early bonemarrow transplant. I can't believe that tiny box of tablets is $4500AU worth.
