Platelet counts can lag the rest of the blood in returning to normal levels. That was my experience since being dx last October. My WBC and RBC counts went below normal within three weeks of starting 400 Gleevec, but my platelets which had started near 500 actually went much higher (close to 1 million) and stayed very high for another six weeks. My onc said that a lag in platelet counts returning to normal happens regularly in many people. So don't feel like you are alone in this weird blood count issue, having low WBC and a high platelet count that initially goes even higher. My platelet count finally returned to normal, but then it starting going too low, and then became relatively stable at the 3 month point.
You definitely need to hang in there with the daily Gleevec. The advice you got about the platelets showing how you are progressing is not very valid in the first few months, but may be in the longer term. The first indication I ever had of anything wrong with me was a very high platelet count a year before the diagnosis, which was ignored by my doctor. Although you are concerned about the high platelet count now, in a few months you will probably be concerned that it is going too low. These things just take time to stabilize. Even when they do get closer to normal ranges, CML blood counts rarely look truly "normal", just acceptable. If the WBC count is well below acceptable levels, then booster drugs are a good option to keep you on Gleevec, which is extremely important. --Trey dx Oct 2005 --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ [CMLHope] A support group of http://cmlhope.com ------------------------------------------------- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "CMLHope" group.
