I had my quarterly checkup today. Everything good except for low
phosphorus count. My phosphorus count has been low since a few months
after I started on Gleevec. Up to now, my Dr. has ignored this, but
today he said that a new study was released showing 1) Gleevec can
reduce the phosphorus count (as can Sprycel), and 2) that a
persistently low count can lead to bone loss. My Dr. thinks this is a
study to be heeded. As a result, he is sending all of his CML patients
(that have a low phosphorus count) to an endocrinologist for further
testing and evaluation. I am going to see an endocrinologist, Dr. Chu,
at City of Hope (where my Dr. practices) who is doing a lot of research
in this area and is said to be extremely knowledgeable.
I Googled "Gleevec phosphorus" and came up with several references that
seem to support what I learned today. In any event, after I see Dr.
Chu, I'll post what I've learned. In the meantime, if anyone has
anything specific to share on this subject, please do.
