I know I am not as educated on CML, but from what my doctors have told me, Interferon is not really even used much anymore for those on CML because of the success of Gleevec. Also I was advised by my doctors that they would not even think about a BMT in my case because of the success of my Gleevec treatment. The sad thing is they also told me I would be on Gleevec for the rest of my life, or until a cure was found, or the Gleevec stops working.
I do agree there is to much money being made on our disease, but if getting a BMT was the cure all, I am sure, or at least hope doctors would push them more then a very expensive drug. I have been told in the case of CML it is a very hard thing to actually "cure", because of it being so resilient. I have been in remission for about two years but my doctors have told me that if I stop taking Gleevec, I will come out of remission, no ifs, ands or buts about it.
Frankly the idea of having to get a BMT scares the hell out of me. I have been told there are cases of people getting up to 3 or 4 of them done and still not be cured. Call me a sissy, but as much as a BMB hurts, I cannot imagine going through a BMT and being told it did not work.
Again I do think it is sad how much money is being made on diseases in general, but let's face it, our society is driven by who can make the most cash, and until if and when that ever changes we will have to deal with it. Just as my doctors have told me I will have to deal with the side effects of Gleevec.
Don't get me wrong, I think people that work hard deserve to live well, and I do not begrudge doctors for making allot of money. As I stated in the past, before being dxed I was about to start making around $60,000 a year just for being a credit card fraud investigator. I graduated high school but I did not go to college, I simply got my foot in the door of the industry as a simple customer service rep and worked my way up. Those that become doctors and do research have to work their butts off to get where they are. What ticks me off are the executives, and this is with any industry, that make a fortune at the expense of those that actually do the work.

Sorry Rob, but my example here is very realistic.  The comparison is
easily made when it comes to the progress that has been made in these
two disease.  Especially when we take into consideration that CML is
the disease that we know the most about.  I would prefer we knew less
about it but walked away from it drug free if you know what I mean.  I
guess we know enough about CML to make drugs that hold us in suspended
animation until the money that's to be made is made....

I think your statistics on Interferon vs BMT are not correct, I would
love them to be because it is much less non-commital to chose
interferon than BMT, but since you have brought it up, I will have to
investigate - stay tuned - if your right, maybe we'll see the 4- 20% of
patients with CML who can be cured with at least 18 months therapy of
interferon give it a try instead of going on with other drugs?

Gee, we just might start a trend....

Cheers and thanks for your input....
