Dear Sandy,

Are Randy's platelet counts 87,000? Nowadays, doctors let platelet
counts go as low as 30,000-40,000 before stopping Gleevec. Our doctor
gives platelet transfusions only when platelet counts are around
15000-20,000. So, don't worry, Randy is still okay. Yes, I am sure
that the higher dose is responsible for the low counts, it is quite
common in 800mg patients and some can take quite long to recover from
the low counts. So, please hang in there, Sandy and tell Randy the
same. The good news is that the FISH is now nearly undetectable so PCR
testing has been recommended. That is great since it means the high
dose Gleevec is working for Randy's disease which is very important.
Roy's platelet counts once went to 90,000 on 400mg Gleevec when he
first started the drug but next clinic visit it was up again. So, look
at the trend. Some doctors stop the drug when platelet counts are
50,000 but nowadays many do not stop the drug unless platelet counts
are 30,000.

Randy is doing fine, dear Sandy. The hematologic side-effects will
subside with time, you have to be patient. And I am sure Randy's
doctor is managing well the low ANC and will also manage low platelet
counts if necessary.

Love,
Anjana
caregiver to Roy
