Jeanie, Sorry, I have been MIA for over a week, came down with a particularly nasty virus that I can't seem to shake.
Six months must seem like a scarey long time when something like this is found! I know that each doctor handles stuff like this differently, so I can only address this from what my docs are doing with it. My onc was also rather blase, but I have found that this is where I feel the most parted out...kind of like a side of beef. Since her primary responsibility is for my CML, she has offered little input on other lesions, like the cancer in my abdomen and the unknown lesions in my lungs. I have found I am rather on my own for other more appropriate opinions. I have the luxury that folks with an HMO don't...I can self refer to any doctor I would like for opinions or treatments. After an exhaustive search I did just find a great surgeon with a really good plan for the abdominal tumor. In regard to the lung lesions, I already had a pulmonary doc that I love, so she was my first stop when the lesions showed up. For me, the CT's are being done every 2 months (although this is also to monitor the abdominal tumor) but I am certain she would change to six months only when she is comfortable that no negative change is being seen over an extended period, in other words, if no change is seen for two or three consecutive scans done 2 or 3 months apart, then it would be reasonable to go six months between scans. I also know that she said if they don't go away, and start to grow, she can get a biopsy as soon as any one of the lesions is 1cm or larger...right now they are all just under 1cm, or less. I know yours are larger than that, which for my pulmonary doc would indicate a biopsy, not a watch and wait. My recommendation in these cases always is a second opinion. Even folks on HMO's who can't self refer are entitled to that. If you want more answers now, be patient active and make some noise. Our bodies, our choice!
