I agree with what your son said about the company's costs in starting a new
drug. However since Novartis has already made billions of dollars because
of Gleevec then their start up costs probably have been satisfied many
times over.

Also if CML is such an "isolated" disease and Novartis doesn't think that
it is worth producing because in the scheme of things CML is not a
prevelant disease considering all of the other types of cancer and has to
keep the price of their older TKI's (Gleevec) for one still high and now
your mentioning even higher then Novartis has to realise that STI-571 now
called Gleevec has netted them billions of dollars for Gleevec alone. It
really put them on the "map" from a fledgeling company to what it is now.

But, as I previously mentioned, cancer is a very profitable entity for drug
companys.

One thing that everyone including these drug companys has to realise
is that if a drug is priced so that no one can afford it then they can't
sell enough to keep their company in business so they now must charge huge
prices for it. Like a dog chasing it's tail...
