Sorry I didn't notice the output file was 160 wide, shame on me ...
Using now "strip" after I read the files, my output is indeed correct.

Silly question... could it be that your input files are F 80, causing
output records of 160 wide that get displayed over two lines?
Put a "strip" after you read the files...
