Drupal does have an e-commerce system. It is a contributed module, but still adheres to the quality standards of Drupal Core. - De shave valid markup - Would not decrease the standard Drupal installations accessibility rating. Zen Cart is far from standards compliant by default, but the developers have done a very good job of separating content and programming logic. Templates are totally isolated and customizable. It just takes a lot of work to correct all the presentation. As far as I know, there are no eCommerce applications that are both open source and standards compliant out of the box.
