Is it possible to block these "please opt into my whitelist" emails from the
mailing list?

To answer my own question, I am not sure whether it is easily doable or
ultimately desirable. But they are annoying - in their frequency and
self-righteousness, they are becoming a form of spam in their own right :)

Cheers, Andrew
