Also, be sure that you're shifting with the hand opposite the one
you're pressing the key with: eg, for C-k, you'd press Ctrl with your
left hand, for C-x, you'd press Ctrl with your right hand -- I was bad
about that for a while, and switching back to doing things the way my
highschool typing teacher beat into me made all the difference.

Actually, it's Emacs, which means it's infinately configurable.  I'd
say try Viper, and if you want a ILISP or Vim command that's missing,
add it or ask on comp.emacs or gnu.emacs.help for help -- they tend to
be nice and helpful, and there are Viper users there.
