Thank You Paul,
You got to the core of the problem on the second line. I hadn't been
thinking in terms of having an image to load up which would then interpret
the command line statements. To fix this round of foolishness I went into
lisp and loaded gray-streams clx clm and hemlock then saved the image
with (extensions:save-lisp "lisp.core") exited lisp and copied lisp.core
to /usr/local/lib/cmucl/lib/ started up again as you said and everything works
great. Thank you for your patience with a newbie.
