Why can you not sail with the gear box in reverse?  I e done that for years to 
keep the shaft from spinning when underway and trashing the bearings in the tx.

This sounds like a pain, especially singlehanded.
If the shaft does not get oriented properly, do the blades produce a
horrible drag, or just a "not quite minimal" drag?
