Actually I think that Guido gave me sort of a hybrid of G1 and G2 for my 25. I
had to install the track, which involved drill & fill the deck, redrill the
holes, and manufacture backing plates out of 1 ½ wide aluminum stock. I used 1
¼ T track, so the cars used had to be from the G2 system.

But the standup blocks and control blocks on my 25 look like those in the photo
of the G1, and are smaller than the comparable components on my 38. Looks like
they might have used 40 series blocks for the 25 and 60 series blocks for the
38.

In any case, I got charges the price of the G1 system, which I considered to be
a bargain.

I’ve always been impressed by the workmanship, robustness and value of Garhauer
stuff. To the point that almost all of the hardware on both of my boats (rigid
vangs, deck organizers, rope clutches genoa cars, the upgraded traveler on the
38, the backstay tensioner on the 25, turning blocks, snatch blocks, even the
rope falls on the dinghy davits on the 38) has been upgraded to Garhauer over
the years.

I guess you’d call me a happy customer.

Yeh the EZ G2 was overkill, but I liked the look of them!

The cars were machined to fit my track too, at no cost.

and how much it will cost.

Rick,

I was making an assumption that the prices on the Garhauer site were "per" and
doubling up! I should have called them. Much more affordable! Thanks for
clarifying that!

Dennis is correct, go for a quality system. I presume your pin stop cars for
Merriman track are like the ones that came on my boat. Regardless of the size
of the split rings, you would never be able to adjust non-bearing cars under
load and that is pretty much the whole idea of of converting to line adjustable
cars.

I don’t quite understand why you say the Garhauer cars will cost about $800.
The price for the EZ G2-UB system (with the stand-up swivel block) in my latest
Garhauer price list is $302. (That is what I have on my 38, BTW, and it works
great.) If you want overkill and go to the EZ G3 heavy duty cars (with a
non=swivel block that will accommodate two sheets for sail changes), the list
price is $363. That is two cars, two control line blocks, for both port and
starboard. Adding the swivel cam cleats to put the control lines at the end of
the track would add $100, or you could lead the control lines to a cam cleat on
each cockpit combing. If I had it to do over, I’d put a cleat on the combing
instead of getting the swivel cleats, which are sort of in inconveniently
positioned outside of the primary winches on my 38.

When I bought my cars a few years ago, Guido machined the cars to fit my
Merriman H track at no cost. Guido said they used to do it a lot, but I bet it
is less common these days.

I’ve crewed on boats with both Lewmar and Harken systems, and I would rate the
Garhauers I have to be as good as the Harken and better than the Lewmars I have
had experience with. They are not as pretty as the Harkens, and perhaps they
weigh a few ounces more, but the Garhauer system is bulletproof and moves
effortlessly under load – which is what really matters to me.

Wise advice. Thank you Part of my problem is that I cannot find strong
stainless split rings that will go through the holes of my pins in the cars to
allow them to be adjusted easily. So if I could find a source for the correct
size and strength split rings I could put off on investing in the adjustable
cars for a year or so!

Jonathan,

One of the dangers of asking for info/advice/opinions on this list is you may
get a response you don't want to hear.

Whenever I don't go first rate and buy a premium system, I end up being
dissatisfied and wishing I'd spent the extra $$.

My opinion, buy a whole adjustable ball bearing genoa car system including
track. New tracks won't cost but a fraction of the whole system. The newer
systems don't use T-track. T-tracks don't handle the loads as well as the
newer tracks.

Years ago, I bought the Lewmar Ocean 1 genoa car system because I was trying to
save a few $$$. I bought the pin stop cars. Then I decided I wanted the
adjustable cars so I upgraded. Lewmar's adjustable cars didn't move well under
load even though they were ball bearing cars. So....when Lewmar brought out
some "new, improved" ball bearing cars I upgraded....again. They're much
better but still don't move like Harken cars. Overall, I've probably spent
more than the Harken system. :(

So....try to save $$$ and fall short of being satisfied OR open the wallet and
get a system that works really well and brings you joy. Your choice. Your
needs and budget may be different than mine.

If I had it to over, I'd open the wallet and buy the Harken system even if I
had to wait another year or two.

I was wondering if anyone had found a way to convert the Merriman genoa cars on
the C&C 35MK III (or similar) so they are fully adjustable. I believe the track
is 1 ¼ inch “T” track. I have looked at Garhauer’s EZ Glide, and that is a
possibility, but a little pricey – looks like the set up I would need will come
in at close to $800 before control lines. I wonder if there are alternatives –
particularly ones that do not involve replacing the track!
