No surfers on Fort Lauderdale beach today.

My wife and I just cycled over there. Fifteen-foot seas breaking on the first
reef with 8- to 10-foot walls of water slamming into the beach. Overnight, the
waves covered State Road A1A and were lapping at the door of the Elbo Room on
Las Olas. Crews are out bulldozing the beach back from A!A to where it belongs.

The storm was pretty far away from us, too, so I guess everyone along the east
coast is going to get some big seas.

Amazingly, there’s only an occasional drowning. The ocean fills up with crazy
surfers along the Southeast Florida coast when hurricanes and big storms pass
by.

Here’s my nominee for most insane act in a South Florida storm. This
powerboater was heading out of Hillsboro Inlet, which I use to reach the ocean:

The surf at Fort Lauderdale was on the television news up here yesterday.
There were interviews with the rescue folks who talked about how dangerous it
was, and then video of surfers trying their luck with the big ones.

I wouldn’t want to be in the Gulfstream right now. Seas are supposed to be 17
to 20 feet off Fort Lauderdale, probably “square waves” because the wind has a
northerly component.

Good luck to all the listers who may be impacted by Sandy.

I'll be thinking about you.
