Boat_SigMy opinion: It’s very easy to talk about freedom and Darwinism and idiots until it’s your son or younger brother or cousin who loses his life due to a bad decision.
I spent several years as a crime reporter on a daily newspaper. I would sit in people’s living rooms and hear stories about young men – it’s almost always young men – losing their lives due to a dare, a perceived challenge or an overdeveloped sense of adventure. For the most part, they were reasonably smart, pleasant people who would have grown into responsible adults except for one very bad day. I wonder: How many of you did stupid things when you were young, but were lucky enough to survive them? Or got shagged away by a cop or a lifeguard before you did yourselves serious harm? Most guys I know, by the time they’re 40, they’ve got a fairly long list. I was down today at Fort Lauderdale beach , where lifeguards were chasing away surfers. Some of them were teen-aged boys, cocky, sure they could handle those 8- to 10-foot walls of water rolling in, not thinking about the bashing they would get or the undertow in these conditions that will pull you out to sea in seconds. I figure those lifeguards were doing a very good deed. If they weren’t there, who knows how many families would be grieving tonight? There are so many folks out there who are looking for someone else to protect them from their stupidity and somehow to benefit financially from that stupidity, that now there are too many laws to protect us from ourselves. And there are too many attorneys out there who are ready to 'help' us benefit from our stupidity. Sorry, but I too am upset with laws to protect us from idiots, including ourselves. Regardless, all of this has led to the downfall of our freedom. In some cases we are ordered out of our houses and in others denied access to our sports. I like my life, charish it, but I want to live it my way. That's why we live in a suposed free country. -- Cheers, Jeff Nelson Muir Caileag C&C 30 Armdale Y.C.
