Calypso has a Webasto Thermo 90 which we installed in 1999. It has performed better than advertised. The installation took some time and planning. Calypso's co-owner and I did most of the installation with guest experts helping out, especially in the exhaust piping. We have three hi/low speed fan/heat exchangers (aft, mid, and forepeak). On a 40F day the cabin can be heated to 70F in less than an hour. (The boat is floating in 50F seawater.)
The added benefit of making domestic hot water is used almost as much as the cabin heat. We have the Everhot domestic water heater that also acts as an additional reservoir for the boiler. The set up can make as much hot water as there is in the tanks. We installed a "summer" valve so the cabin heat can be closed off when making domestic hot water. We also have a 4 gallon HWT that heats from shore power and engine waste heat. Sure Marine may still offer an installation package, possibly with a boat show special price. We did it without the package as I had a connection on a discounted source for the main components. To Sure Marine's credit they help us out as if we purchased the main equipment from them. I purchased all the smaller parts, hoses, valves etc. from Sure Marine. I have been a Sure Marine customer ever since for other propane and heating parts/service. Tom, if you want to take a look at Calypso's installation she is moored at Shilshole Bay Marina, E dock, slip 9. Right now and until the first week of April the interior is all ahoo with a wet deck core repair project but if you don't mind some dust I don't mind giving a tour. The area that has the boiler/furnace, exhaust, piping, valves and reservoir is accessable (under the cockpit) without entering the dusty areas. I have decided that a hydronic system is the way to go as it will have the added advantage of hot water while at anchor. I have pretty much settled on the <http://www.suremarineservice.com/TSL17SW-12.aspx> Webasto TSL17<http://www.suremarineservice.com/TSL17SW-12.aspx> http://www.suremarineservice.com/TSL17SW-12.aspx Has anyone on the list had one of these units or installed a hydronic system (especially in a 37+!). Suggestions or general thoughts on this, of course, welcome. Tom B Tom Buscaglia SV Alera C&C 37+/40 Vashon Island WA (206) 463-9200 www.sv-alera.com <http://www.sv-alera.com/>
