I was wondering whether anyone else (particularly 35-3 owners) had come
across substantial differences in construction techniques across builds. I
came across a little surprise on Mojito this morning.

I had quite a few blisters in the Awlgrip on the topsides of Mojito and
they finally got ugly enough this year that I decided to re-finish the
topsides (as-in get the yard to do it). I thought that the blisters were
caused by shrink-wrapping over the awlgrip, but they appeared to grow worse
year over year, despite my eschewing shrink-wrap for that reason. The yard
started work at stripping off the old paint, and it looks like there are
two coats of paint / fairing underneath; the last job that was done by the
PO in 2001, and something that looks original; there is no gel coat on the
topsides at all... The blisters are probably caused by solvent
encapsulation, and would have continued to get worse.

The yard manager says he's seen that before on C&C's built as one-offs,
where they were trying for lighter, racing versions of boats (don't tell
PHRF...). The hull number is ZCC35133M84J, which suggests Niagara on the
Lake, right, and is nowhere near the beginning of the series? The end
result for me is paying for another 30-40 hours of stripping / fairing
(ouch), which I will have to deal with, but I'll end up with a very nice
result. I'd like to understand more of whether this was original or
something that happened later. Is it possible someone peeled the gel coat
earlier in the boat's life? Does anyone else have a C&C with no gel coat?

Thanks,

Tim
