Barrier coats became popular after our boats were built. I'm convinced blisters
became common after more powerful pressure washers started being used at
marinas. Some builders started selling their boats w barrier coats, and some
dealers barrier coated new boats like auto dealers undercoated cars. Most
builders switched to a different gel coat and resin to resist blisters. Our
34/36 hulls are supposed to use a resin that is water and blister resistent and
a barrier coat should be unnecessary. Barrier coating the hull is a lot cheaper
than bottom painting, and adds value for the life of the vessel.

When I removed all of the bottom paint on Resolute in 2007, I barrier coated
the bottom for my own peace of mind, because it was an opportune time to do it.
No regrets.

Subject: Re: Stus-List Two paint questions

Hi all- Now that the boat is put to rest for the winter, I am thinking about
new projects for the spring.

1- There are a few spots where connections have leaked in the engine
compartment and the paint is peeling off the metal. What kind of paint would be
appropriate to repair this with to keep rust down?

2. The yard service guy took a look at the bottom of my boat prior to the
blasting job (this week?) and scraped about a 6” square area to see what was
there. According to him there was no barrier coat under the bottom paint, but
the gel coat looked fine. I have never heard of a bottom without barrier coat.
Is that possible? I certainly plan to barrier coat it this spring prior to
painting, but this was a surprise.
