Dave, Full disclosure, I work for a company that makes shock cord. I would recommend polyester cover shock cord over the cheaper polypropylene stuff. Better UV protection for sure! You can buy the good stuff by the foot or by the reel through rwrope.com or Annapolis Performance Sailing. Generally 1/4" will serve the needs of most tasks on a racer/cruiser. Hog ring pliers and hog rings can be found at commercial fishing and lobstering supply houses such as Hercules SLC or Ketchum Traps. Happy to answer any questions.
