Josh,

Because of the “core” on bungee is actually strands of rubber, shock cord tends
to shrink in diameter when elongated. As such, whipping the end of bungee cord
works great until it is stretched, at which time the whipping can slide off
since it is no longer tight on the cord. Same with knotting a shock cord. Can
you put a stopper knot on bungee? Sure, but just be prepared for it to slip as
the cord is stretched and the cord diameter decreases dramatically. That said,
on my Laser, I have several knotted connections using shock cord, both on my
outhaul system and on the daggerboard, simply because I need to be able to
untie and disconnect the cord from what it is holding in place, but I generally
tie the knots with some amount of tension on the cord and leave plenty of tail
on the other side of the knot to allow for slippage.

The best way I’ve found to terminate the end of shock cord is to simply cut and
burn it with a hot knife which fuses the core and melted cover together.

Any good reason not to tie or whip the bungee cord?

Looking to buy some hog ring pliers, rings and bulk shock cord to sort a few
things. Am assuming that as in life, there is good and bad in bungee, and that
probably someone here knows all about it.

Need to repair my spinnaker pole, and also rig some custom-length shock cords
on various other items. Seems like handy stuff and tools to have around. My
web search skills have so far failed me.

Any suggestions as to sources, (I know sailrite, amazon) and how to discern
good from bad quality?

Thanks!

Dave
