You can use it *under sail only* and *only by itself*. I never use mine in the Bay. I used to use it, but after about the 5th time I almost got run over and yelled at for having no lights, I discovered powerboaters do NOT look up. I do like it offshore, when the waves are spreader height the deck level lights don’t really show up at all. If you want to combine deck and masthead lights, you need 360 degree red over 360 degree green. “Red over green, sailing machine”
