To start with, I am sorry to hear the news. This is awful.

Our Club (Nepean Sailing Club in Ottawa, ON) does not allow any stands - only
foldable cradles.

Probably for several reasons. I imagine that both stands and cradles can do
well, if properly used and set up. However, the cradles need less
preparation/fiddling around during the haul out. We do about 100 boats during
the haul out/launch using a couple of commercial cranes and we are able to take
a boat out of the water and put it in a cradle within about 10 min (7 min on
average during the spring launch). Granted, this is a coordinated effort with
two teams about 20-25 people each. I cannot imagine that this could be done
with individual stands.

Another thought - we put about 400 boats in the yard; they are tightly packed.
The boats at the perimeter all face the prevailing (strong) winds to limit the
windage. Knock on wood, we did not have any boat falling off the cradle even
though we had some decent winds (regularly we get 50+ kt. winds during the
winter). We had a boat falling off the cradle a year and a half ago, but it was
in the fall (most boats were still in the water), but at that time, the wind
was registered around 85-90 kt. (micro burst).

I would be interested in some opinions on the use of stands. I am on the Launch
& Haulout
team at the club I am at, chair for a few years. We have required cradles for
sailboats and
have accepted stands for power boats by exception only.

We had four large powerboats fall off jack stands in Erie. The cradles all
fared okay.
