we use robocup holders and are very happy with them. they are a heavy
spring loaded clamp on style and can clamp on a stanchion, or the
binnacle guard, or any other verticle 1-1/2 inch or less. They never
fall off accidentally and we remove them after every sail. Kind of like
the instrument covers routine. The instrument covers come off and go in
the space where we store the robocups which then go out in the cockpit
and vice versa. they are like $20 each but our first one is probably 7
years old and still works perfectly. I guess the only downside is that
the mounting orientation is fixed but, that has never been an issue for
us as we mount them on the binnacle guard.
funny thing was, I kept eying one in the ships store at our last
marina. They had just one, clamped to a shelving rack. Finally I said,
I'll have that! They all started laughing and making fun of me...
"what the hell are you gunna do with that?!" they said... We loved them
so much a bought 2 more and I may buy another one to have 4. There are
2 cup-holders per robocup so we have 6 cup holders now and may have 2
more soon

The clamp mounts are too small for our binnacle (which is 1.25") but
they also come with velcro straps with rubber non-slide that work very
well. They also do an admirable job of swinging with the wheel.
