There are facilities at both ends of the Erie Canal to step/instep the mast. People do it all the time.

I was informed they are all over at Lake Champlain. We would have to go the wrong way up the Saint Lawrence to get to the Great Lakes, I cannot fit under the bridges on the Erie Canal. Your trip going to the Bahamas sounds like more the right direction! I often wonder how our boat got to the East Coast. Did C&C motor them down the Erie with the masts unstepped? Go all the way out the long way via the Saint Lawrence? Trucks? The current is very strong in several places, up to 4 - 4.5 knots. A times I thought I was go I get backwards😜. I also went out the St. Lawrence in 2014 on my way to the Bahamas. It’s easy to do 10 knots maybe more. Did 13.1 motor sailing with the current around Tadoussac. It seems like too much flow could flood Montreal. Last time I was in Montreal the current headed east was pretty strong anyway, so I assume this really could effect slow boats headed upstream. There is a lot of controversy over the IJC Plan 2014. The deciding factor is controlling the spring flooding at Montreal and depths for commercial traffic. I’ve really simplified it, it is infinitely more complex. Does anything control the amount of water that heads out to sea down the St. Lawrence Seaway, Erie Canal, and so on?
