I think that scrimping on paint will be detrimental, because if you look at older cars, fading and paint failure is very common, especially here in the south where we get a lot of sun. That paint also won't take the abuse that Imron will.
I understand your thinking, and can even easily see that it would probably be very easy to apply well, since so many cars are painted every year. Heck, if you find the right body repair guy, a few cases of beer and promises to go sailing might even get the job done (as long as you do the prep work). So, if you are up north, if you don’t want to spend the $ for professional application (I consider it beyond my capabilities), and the boat isn't worth the $, it probably isn't a bad solution as long as you realize what you'll have when you're done.
