I have been considering replacing my hard wood shims with the Spartite plug, since I pull my mast every year for transport the boat to my house.  It is a pain to waterproof the mast/partner ring due to the hard vang being mounted 1/4 inch above the ring; so using continuous wide shrink tape around the mast partner mast is not possible.

The boat is a1974 C&C 35-2 that has six turning blocks for halyards/topping lift mounted on the partner ring or to cabin top adjacent to the mast.  Thus, it has two straps (P&S) mounted/hooked on the ring, going down the mast, to be thru bolted to the mast, to keep the cabin top from being lifted.  Has anyone successfully used and sealed a Spartite plug to this arrangement?

Is Spartite the best way to shim a mast in the deck ring? Are there other ways to shim a mast for a DIYer?
