I have a 16" Max Prop on our 38 Landfall.

Has a 3HMF with a ZF v-drive ( 2.1 ).

Currently I have the pitch at 8" from a previous attempt at a pitch of 10".
I think it is under-pitched at 8" and will return to 10" over the winter.
At 2000 rpm no problem getting just over 6 knots... 2400 gets closer to 7
but that is about the limit under power as the stern starts to squat pretty
bad.

At your 14", given I have a similar setup, I would think it a little
over-pitched. But assuming you aren't overloading the engine ( black smoke
etc ) you should get good speed at modest RPM. You might, as you suspect,
be causing the transmission to slip... Assuming it has plates/cones.
