Hi,  I've had old Barient on my 1975 C&C and have upgraded them to Lewmars EVO
10 years ago ( 2-speeds , Self-Tailing ) and used the Lewmar winch grease ( a
small 4 ounces tube will last many years ). With both brands I always grease
everything EXCEPT the pawls ( lubricate them with oil only, as per
manufacturer's recommandation ). Originally I'd used Canadian Tire synthetic
grease ( maybe too much! ) but it leaked on the gelcoat for several months.I
found the Practical Sailors that leaded me to use the Lewmar grease ( 2
articles : Budget Priced Winch Grease - Practical Sailor in which there's a
link to the 2016 edition test for brand names ) It contains all the interesting
info to select an appropriate grease...

 Hey Guys,
I am wondering about where to put grease on old winches.I have a Harken
Barbarossa 41.2 st 2 speed winch.I see that with new winches you use minimal
winch grease on the gears and nothing else. I am wondering if that is the same
for old winches as well?Do I apply grease to the needle roller bearings that
contact the drum? Mine are made of metal. And if so would I use winch grease,
or just regular waterproof grease? When I opened it up, it was packed full of
grease, is that correct?
