Alan,

I almost had the exact same mast/RR bridge collision back in the early 90's
with my 1980 C&C 36. We picked up the new to us boat in Lake Union and headed
west through the Lake Washington Ship Canal, opening the bridges as required.
There was a train crossing the bridge while we were locking down to Puget Sound
so my plan was to request an opening after the train was past. As we exited the
Ballard Locks, with current behind us, the engine (Yanmar 3 cyl.) stopped
running. I requested an opening with a horn, asked my crew to prepare to anchor
(we've been on the boat 45 minutes, anchor status unclear), and I attempted to
re-start the engine.

The engine would run for approx. 20 seconds then die again indicating a blocked
fuel supply. I was able to start it in reverse to slightly slow our rate of
advance towards the still lowered bridge. I was relieved to hear the bridge
tender acknowledge my opening request, but that bridge is slow to open, and I
was closing in fast. I continued to start the engine in reverse and steered
for the south end of the bridge where it lifted first.

So, we cleared by an estimated 3 feet as the bridge deck continued to rise.
That afternoon I contacted a fuel tank cleaning and fuel polishing service.
The blockage was caused by bits of rubber and debris in the tank. After our
tank cleaning and some maintenance on the fuel system there were no
re-occurrences of that problem.

Subject: Stus-List Re: Masthead sheaves 35-3

Interesting story about my mast replacement. I was motoring from the Seattle YC
to Shilshole Bay Marina. After passing under several bridges (after calling the
bridge operators for an opening) I received a phone call. There was still a
railroad bridge to pass under, but it was usually kept open, and I wasn't
paying attention. While talking on the phone, I hit the bridge (that was down)
and got stuck under it. I had to call the bridge operator to release me.
Fortunately only the very top of the mast got stuck, although the crash took
out my masthead instruments and VHF antenna. When I got to the moorage, I
looked at the top of the mast with binoculars and didn't see any major damage.
The next day I motored down to the Tacoma YC to spend the night before a race
the next day. Two club members hoisted me up to the top of the mast so I could
get a better look. The rigging was intact, but the cap at the top of the mast
was bent up. On race day, the wind was light, so I figured the rig was strong
enough for me to race. As we crossed the starting line, someone on the
committee boat yelled out "Hey, you're the one who hit my bridge." It was the
bridge operator. I spent the rest of the summer sailing in south Puget Sound,
and around the San Juan and Gulf Islands. I didn't want to have the mast
inspected until I returned to Portland, or my insurance company might have
required me to keep my boat up north until repairs were made.

When I returned to Portland, I had the mast inspected by a surveyor recommended
by the insurance company. The repair estimate was more than my hull insurance,
so the insurance company totaled the boat, and I bought it back for $5,000. I
ended up with a new Selden mast, new standing rigging, new Harken furler, new
Tides Marine Strong Track and a new rudder (which was leaking water, even
before the accident). Most of the cost was covered by insurance. The Strong
Track from the old mast wouldn't fit the new mast, so I had to buy a new one.
If anyone wants to buy the old Strong Track, in very good condition ($300 US
including shipping) message me directly. I also have spreaders and other parts
from the old mast for sale.

Alan, that would be great. How many sheaves are up there? Am I counting three
axles? You replaced the mast? That's enthusiastic.

All of the sheaves at the masthead of PS are looking and feeling in bad shape.
I suspect the axles they ride on may be compromised as well. 1984 boat with the
"old" (same as C&C 34) mast section.
I know people have changed them out, so does anyone here have any idea what
size sheaves I would need to replace those?
