| Last season I had a hard time matching the Smoke Awlgrip on Alera repainting a ding last year. I’m not sure how this happened, but a person was at our club a few weeks ago with a special machine to color match Awlgrip colors. The fellow that handled the patch for me got the Interlux guy to test my paint and now I have the correct paint match. Might be worth a call to interlux.

Hi Karl and Doris, The red is probably either Toreador Red or Bright Red—Sunfast wasn’t available when your boat was painted, I don’t think. For touch ups go with less reducer than they recommend for brushing and follow their surface prep instructions to the letter. If you start to get craters, wipe off the paint with alcohol and start your prep again. Bear in mind that red doesn’t not cover very well at all so it will doubtless require several coats to become opaque. You can apply three coats a day if you wait until the last coat is no longer tacky—usually about an hour or so when it’s warm out. And you have a good day before it cures so you can apply a coat the next morning, too. I would prep the surface with 320 wet/dry sandpaper so you don’t get scratch mark in your finished coat. If you have to mix colors to match you boat, be very sparing: a drop of black in a cup of red paint will turn the lot burgundy. Hope this helps. One other thing, bring money! Awl Grip ain’t cheap! Hello all,
Doris and I own FIREFLY a C&C 29 Mk1 which had previously been in Portland Oregon. She's up on lake Pend Oreille now a days.
She was painted with a red AWLGRIP in 1998 (I believe her owner at that time was Mr. Gary Scott).
Over the years some wear spots have developed and she could use some touch ups so we are attempting to figure out the color code for the red that was used so we can match.
If anyone from the list has suggestions or if any of the Portland crew knows or has a line to Mr. Scott so I could ask, please reach out via email at [email protected] or via text/cell/signal at 360-606-2099
Thanks all.
Respectfully, Karl
