I have transfered numerous sites between 550-550 and 550-bluequartz and bluequartz-550, all with 2.53, and all without error. The only thing playing up is openwebmail users, since it creates a symlink for mbox which is no longer valid after transfer. Simply deleting the symlink solves that, but it can be time consuming on large numbers of users.
