It needs to be a null modem cable (also called a Laplink cable), not
just a standard serial cable. Null cable "rolls" transmit and receive
wires in the cable to directly connect them on each end; standard
serial is a "straight through" connecting transmit to transmit,
receive to receive.

I don't think any flow control is needed.  I've never explicitly set
it that I can recall...
