Haven't power cycled it yet, but so far, just hooking up the modem

Which is
recommended?
It needs to be a null modem cable (also called a Laplink cable), not
just a standard serial cable. Null cable "rolls" transmit and receive
wires in the cable to directly connect them on each end; standard
serial is a "straight through" connecting transmit to transmit,
receive to receive.
I don't think any flow control is needed. I've never explicitly set
it that I can recall...
Well, I can't completely explain it, but I'll take it. Repair
Procedure #1 retains it's #1 position.
Rebooted the thing again, and it came back just fine. It's been
online for 45 minutes now, it dealt with the queue of email being
unleashed from our primary MX/spam filter partner, it allows SSH back
in, and I can send/receive mail though it.
I guess I'll just cross my fingers, and move making a new, faster
mail server up the priority list.
Steve.
