Hello, Birders. Here are some odds and ends from around Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, these past two days, Thursday & Friday, March 19th & 20th. Observers: Hannah, Andrew, and me. Lesser Canada Goose. This was really cool. We saw 800 fly over in several tight flocks *incredibly high up* during the 6pm hour on March 19th. Binocular views. They weren't Cacklings, based on neck size, and the occasional "normal"/large Canada Geese (~10 total) in the mix really stood out for their large size. Likely, these were birds in sustained overland diurnal migration. Bufflehead. A pair at Greenlee Reservoir on March 19th; uncommon, for whatever reason, at the site. Chukar. 1 chucking along at the east edge of Greenlee Preserve on March 20th. Add that to the occasional Northern Bobwhites and Ring-necked Pheasants at the site, and you have a Boulder County chicken hotspot! Cooper's Hawk. 2 males dog-fighting on the 20th. Spectacular. American Kestrel. A threesome at a nest hole on the 20th; 2 females, 1 male. Boulder. Figures. Killdeer and Mourning Dove. All over the place. They're baa-ack. Townsend's Solitaire. 1 pausing in a birch tree on the 20th; probably wandering back to the breeding grounds. Hermit Thrush. The overwintering bird, apparently of one of the Pacific Slope races, was there on the evening of the 19th. Spotted Towhee. At least 2 males singing their heads off both days.
Dark-eyed Juncos. Lots, of various subspecies. Definitely on the move now. Common Grackle. 35 flew over on the 19th. They're baa-ack.
