Following is an eBird report that I submitted today for observations on a hike
to the summit of Buffalo Mountain in Summit County. Highlights were
White-tailed Ptarmigan and Rosy-Finch.

Location:     Summit County
Observation date:     7/11/09

Notes:     Hiked to the summit of Buffalo Mtn with Jim Miller from Ithaca, NY.
He had the White-tailed Ptarmigan, see note below.  We did have Rosy-Finches,
see note below.  While Brown-capped would be the expected, the calls just did
not seem right.  I could be wrong on this one although my gut says otherwise.
We also had 4 Mountain Goat including a very young one, ~5 Pikas, and 41 Elk
including ~12 very small calves which were seen in the valley to the west of
the summit.
Number of species:     17

White-tailed Ptarmigan     3     a female with 2 young, not too far beyond the
"false" summit of Buffalo Mtn at just over 12,000'.  Seen by Jim Miller
Broad-tailed Hummingbird     2
Common Raven     2
Mountain Chickadee     1
Rock Wren     1     COnfirmed (CF) carrying food
Ruby-crowned Kinglet     2
Townsend's Solitaire     1
Hermit Thrush (Western mountains)     1
American Robin     2
American Pipit     1     just below the summit of Buffalo Mtn.  Also had one
flying over the summit so not sure if 1 or 2 birds
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's)     3
Western Tanager     1
Lincoln's Sparrow     2     right at the start of the Buffalo Cabin Trail
White-crowned Sparrow     1
Dark-eyed Junco     1
Black Rosy-Finch     3     These birds were heard only so I could be wrong but
the song\call was the same as the Black or Gray-crowned (not here in summer)
vs. the Brown-capped as  I listened to Stokes Western Birds on iPhone at the
same time I heard the birds calling.  The song\call did not sound like
Brown-capped which would be expected.  Admittedly, I am not an expert on the
sounds of Rosy-Finches so I could be wrong.  Searched snow fields and adjacent
areas for a visual but unsuccessfully.
Pine Siskin     2
