At Rio Grande SWA (north of Home Lake) this AM (9/16), at least a dozen
female Western Tanagers were feasting on insects in a clump of shrubs and trees
and even on the dirt lane. In trees on south edge of Home Lake, two Warbling
Vireos. On Home Lake, Western Grebes had some surprisingly young offspring with
them - not babies, but much too young for migration, it seemed to me. Also at
the lake, a Greater Yellowlegs, a few Am. Wigeons, Pied-billed and Eared
Grebes, and, of course, Am. Coots. A Double-crested Cormorant overhead. First
snow on mtns. last weekend, on west side of San Luis Valley. Have not heard
about or seen Sandhill Cranes yet. Don't bother to phone the NWR office for
info, as you will only get a recorded answer for staff and info.like last
spring's crane festival!!
