At Boulder Reservoir late this afternoon:
Horned Grebe, 20
Bald Eagle, 1 adult
Pectoral Sandpiper, 1
Baird's Sandpiper, 2
Sabine's Gull, 1 juvenile. Although the bird was distant and the light a bit
dim, I had very good and long scope looks. The funny thing about this bird was
that all the parts that my field guides show as brown (on the head, neck, back,
and wings) appeared to be black. So, the bird appeared to be totally black and
white. A couple of the black and white photos in Grant's Gulls appear to be
dark gray and approach what I saw, but what I saw was a bird that with all dark
parts quite black. The "M" shape on the dorsal side of the bird in flight
appeared uniformly black, and I watched for an hour or so. It was really pretty
striking.
Herring Gull, 1 juvenile
Bluebird species, 20
American Pipit, 4
