[Learned something about hackberry psyllids - those leaves which fall
prematurely due to frost before adult psyllid emergence (not normal but
apparently the case this year because of our cool spring and rather cool
summer), still produce psyllids. The psyllids, unphased by the freeze, emerge
from nipplegalls on fallen leaves and then fly to overwintering sites in tree
bark crevices nearby. Such psyllids will likely escape migrant passerines (I
saw no typical psyllid-eating bird species foraging among fallen leaves) but
will still be available trunk bark-gleaner species (creepers, kinglets,
nuthatches, chickadees, etc.) during winter and presumably during spring
migration to passerines when they leave overwintering sites and fly back up
into the crowns to lay eggs on newly expanding buds/leaves. Apparently some
normal-albeit-a-bit-late emergence already occurred and is on-going at present
from unfallen leaves, as the hackberries continue to support large numbers of
yellow-rumps, a lone Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and the nuthatch.]
Fairmount Cemetery
Golden-crowned Kinglet (1 male) still present, may winter here
Total for Lamar over the last two days: 62 species
