I visit the Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge often as a birder and also for our programs for the disabled.
On their website http://www.fws.gov/arapaho/ , the Refuge has listed their new hunting plan which is being made available for public comment. The comment period will close on June 18, 2010. I called and asked the CDOW in Hot Sulphur Springs about their policy of hunting sage grouse. The woman told me that they know that the USFW is trying to list sage grouse as endangered, but until they do, you can hunt them in places in Colorado. The ANWR will allow hunting of sage grouse during its season on the Refuge according to this hunting plan. From visiting with locals, I think they would like the refuge to be closed to hunting of sage grouse. I thought that this might be something that COBirds members would like to know about and be able to make comments on. I think if there is enough public comment in support of NOT hunting sage grouse on the Refuge, they might reconsider their hunting plan. I am also in strong support of closing the hunting area that is near the boardwalk/nature trail and overlook in the fall during the hunting season. Not everyone is a hunter who wants to enjoy the Refuge during the fall season. Carol from Granby I sent this to Rachel for her approval before submitting. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
