I was finally able to get down to the lower Arkansas Valley area to do a little birding yesterday. Since my elderly dog has to come along I only birded parts of Crowley and Otero Counties. There were 3 Forster's Terns diving around the edges of Lake Henry so I was able to get a few photos and have uploaded them to my BirdsAndNature <http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com>blog. A flock of small peeps flew across the lake but were too distant to id. I see a Baird's Sandpiper working the shoreline. Otherwise just a few Coots, cormorants and white-headed gulls there. Lake Meredith had a number of aechmorus grebes. white-headed gulls, distant Am White Pelicans and no shorebirds though the water has lowered to provide shoreline.
Lake Holbrook had it's usual Am White Pelicans, white-headed gulls but a dearth of late shorebirds. I did see one Lesser Yellowlegs working the shoreline. I did find at least 4 Burrowing Owls in a prairie dog town north of La Junta that has been a productive breeding area for this species. They seemed to breed late this year here-maybe related to cold June in this area . Saw a number of migrating Vesper Sparrows and got some nice photos that I will get up on my blog.
