We decied to go to Lathrop State Park (Martin Lake) this morning and were
rewarded with excellent looks at a Lesser-black Backed Gull. We first saw
the bird on the ice...where the yellow legs stood out, it was close to a
California Gull, making size and color comparison easier. Later the gull was
in with Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers, Common Goldeneyes, and 2
California Gulls. We also saw the bird in flight several times. This bird is
not on the official "Checklist of Birds for Huerfano County"...so we would
be interested to see if any other birders have seen one in our area.

We also saw 12+ Eastern Bluebirds
50+ Mountain Bluebirds
15+ Cedar Waxwings (our first of 2011)
1 (very late for this time of year) Ringed Kingfisher
25-30 Northern Flickers
100+ American Robins
25-30 Bushtits
1 (again very late) Great Blue Heron

Meanwhile back at the house:
White-crowned Sparrow
2 Song Sparrows
4 Spotted Towhees
2 White-winged Doves
dozens of Evening Grosbeaks
50+ Pinyon Jays
15 (the numbers just keep getting bigger) Cassin's Finches
75 or so Dark-eyed Juncos
1 imm. Harris's Sparrow (this one likes to come in first thing in the
morning...then absent in the middle of the day...however he and the Song
Sparrows are always the last to leave in the evening)
up to 4 Downy Woodpeckers
1 lone female Hairy Woodpecker
35-40 American Goldfinches
35-40- Pine Siskins
15 or so House finches
